Wooden House Wintry Wanderings from Canadian Needle Nana

It seems to be all about the weather here in the winter months. Saturday, when I went out with the dogs, the temperature was this with a wind chill of -34C.

But the sun was shining and I could feel its warmth on my face. That was so nice while on the pond throwing the ball for the dogs. Then it warmed up and here in winter, that means the snow comes. We have a few more centimeters on the ground and it's still snowing. The school buses are not running this morning so another snow day for most ...

Wildlife Shenanigans, EPP Project, Christmas Embroideries from Canadian Needle Nana

Well, my heart was in my mouth this morning as I let out the dogs. While opening the patio door, there was a tiny rabbit hopping into the garden and going under the deck. Luckily the dogs were headed off in the opposite direction. I stomped my feet on the deck so it would hide and it must have as they didn't even smell it. A close call and so happy this does not happen often, maybe once a year. The fencing around the back area is doubled in some places to keep the dogs in and wildlife out ...

Morning Routine, Quilt Finish, Embroidering Flowers, Wildlife from Canadian Needle Nana

So it is Halloween here in Canada and a very wet, cold one in our corner of the country. Here is what I've done this morning before sitting down with a cup of half caf.

Fed the dogs and let them out and back in. Put cream on Ned's little spot he's licked too much. Also had to chase him to get a tissue from him. Boy, does he love tissues and he has an insane ability to sus them out!

Ran the swifter over the floor in the t.v.room and this main area. Dog ...

Beauty Product, Embroidering Pumpkins, Amish Hexagons, Shows to Watch from Canadian Needle Nana

It's the flight of the geese season now, a natural cycle here in Canada. I've never been able to get a good photo of them with their marvelous vees marking the sky. But I am getting photos of the bright colours beginning to mark the landscape these days too. We both noticed it's getting darker earlier too or "closing in" as the old people called it.

I was dropping something off at Beth's yesterday and couldn't resist taking a photo of her pretty front veranda view.
I like how in these newer subdivions they don ...

Can You See It?, Videos and Shows to Watch, Slow and Fast Stitching from Canadian Needle Nana

August has brought welcome cooler temperatures here this week to the Ottawa Valley, Canada. The season of growing things with all the greens and the buzzing things is at its height...this meadow below was literally abuzz, so much so I would not walk through it. In particular, there was a large fly there we used to call stouts as kids. Have no idea what exactly is a stout but we were afraid of them as they could bite.

Speaking of green, I saw this frog and was intrigued by his 2/3's brown and 1/3 green colouring ...

Stitchy Wizardry, Blue Strings, Summer Desserts from Canadian Needle Nana

Well summer is upon us...it happens around this time every year :) no matter what the weather or temperatures. And what a marvel it all is. From the very early morning light to later sunsets, I am trying my best to take it all in and appreciate it. For it all moves by quickly...take the Phoebes with their nest on the sound box on the back of the house, for instance. The family...three little ones, are already raised and gone. They must have snuck out in the dead of night for me to have missed them the way ...

Snowy Goings-On at the Wooden House from Canadian Needle Nana

My eyes are drawn to the tops of trees these days. No leaves so I've been rewarded with a glimpse of something or other-birds, nests, etc. Lately I've twice seen a turkey way up in the branches. Especially up so high there, they look completely out of place. How do they rest that long neck I wonder. Surely it can't be comfortable. Once a week, a flock still wanders through the front yard area. And lately a small flock of Dark-Eyed Juncos has been around the feeders. They are on their southern holiday from the Arctic. What ...

Old Folk Issues, Me These Days, Happy Hand Stitching from Canadian Needle Nana

The male and female Red Cardinals have been visiting the big feeders late afternoon just at almost dusk. Maybe they load up on a little nutrition to get them through the cold night. It's hard to get a photo of them together and this was taken from a great distance. I wonder if they are the same pair I see all the time as it's believed Red Cardinals mate for life.

You've probably figured out by now that my favourite stitching is hand stitching. With that in mind, I've started another EPP project, this one ...

Tablerunner, Morris Embroidery, Cross Stitch Finish, Show to Watch from Canadian Needle Nana

Mid July and it is still all about the outdoor gardens both wild and tended, for me these days. To think that just a few short months ago this was all buried under a mountain of ice and snow! And I still hold a strong awe and wonder about the whole wee seed to beautiful blossom process. But I'm thankful too to keep my indoor plants alive and doing well.

Like the beautiful Ardisia or Coral Berry below I received for Christmas. I took it outside just for a portrait in July sunshine. It has tolerated the eggshell/banana ...

Butterfly Freebies, Blooms and Bramble Blooms II, Slow Stitching from Canadian Needle Nana

Young robin, pond bathing...

The garden has become overgrown and I'm a bit overwhelmed trying to keep up. Who knew rain and heat interspersed with sun were the perfect combination for plant growth, :). Look how everything is spilling onto the front steps. Usually this is a late August look.
I'd planted many Day Lilies to line the beds on either side. I chose the brightest red/rust colours to contrast with the white Hydrangeas that usually steal the show. The Day Lilies are being smothered by all the other growth this year. Here is an inadvertent movie I ...

Tempestry Project, Confetti Scraps, Woodpecker Slow Stitching, Friday Nights from Canadian Needle Nana

"Into your hands and out of your head"- Kate, The Last Homely House.

She was referring to the comfort and special calm that stitching can bring us.

Kate was recently a guest lecturer on a Norwegian stitching cruise where she met the lady who is one of the leaders of the Tempestry Project. This is a project where you stitch a temperature chart of the year you were born and one of this year. An easy way to track if the climate has changed much in that area. It would be interesting, wouldn't it?  You can see more about ...

April Snowstorm, Chookshed Challenge, Crochet from Canadian Needle Nana

Mother Nature had a surprise in store for us. A winter snowstorm began last night and is continuing this morning. Woke up to this...

Hopefully winter 2024's very last blast. I'm not at all upset as I've been worried about the lack of ground water the very early spring might cause. Perhaps this will help. And we have not lost the power, which they were warning us about, so fingers and toes crossed...

Deanna at Dreamworthy Quilts chose #9 for our Chookshed Stitchers Challenge this month. I was so happy to get out my #9 which is ...

Quilting in Blues and Reds, Favourite Fictional Couple from Canadian Needle Nana

I can hear the sound of water dripping from the eaves outside...a late March/early April sound in February. And no snow in the foreseeable forecast either... 2024 is dealing out a different winter that's for sure.
Another week with more appointments...medical checkup for Tony and a hair cut for me. I think it was my second professional haircut in the last five years. Anyway, sadly I'm not impressed; in fact, have been doing a little trimming here and there to even things out. I gave the lady, a single working mom of two little kids ...

Bramble Blooms QAL, Quiltmania Xmas, Sweet Gifts from Canadian Needle Nana

We dog sat during the holidays while Beth and family spent New Years Eve at a hotel which is their tradition. This is Petey and Ned after the ball playing... panting at me, right in my face. Just don't care at all. :D  You can see the difference in height between the two brothers in this one.

We finished Billions...loved all the many references to sports, books, history, philosophers, politicians, pop culture, etc.; their research team must have had a field day.  I also loved the music that was chosen for each show. We are now watching something ...

Quilt Projects Update, Sites to Explore, A Show Too from Canadian Needle Nana

The autumn pinkish purple Smoke tree was ablaze in the early morning sun which did not stay long.
A little touch of fungus is making interesting patterns on a few of its leaves.

We are watching a version of D. H. Lawrence's work including Women in Love on Brit Box. It is two very lengthy episodes with a wonderful cast. A little note...there is nudity.

I'm finished the 10 straight quilt lines on Christmas Coins. I'm happy to be hand quilting more interesting lines now... this design. It's just hand drawn curlicues that I think ...

Crochet, QAL's, Wool Shopping, Billions from Canadian Needle Nana

Autumn Marigolds with a little dew, very early morning. Flirting with frost warnings this week.

Through the camera lens, this one looked like it was made of porcelain.
Something I saw I wanted...with heating with wood during our winters, there are cold nooks and crannies about the house. I think I need one of these...I was given a short one last winter which I loved so a full length might be even better. I think I'm going to put it on my Christmas gift list for the girls too. Definitely not chic! At Amazon (not affiliated).
Speaking ...

Starbucks Treat, Teresa's Video, QAYG Autumn Tablerunner from Canadian Needle Nana

No sign of a groundhog in about a month now. Also my hummingbirds have disappeared. Yesterday, the geese flew overhead with their familiar wild honking. I never tire of watching their beautiful v's cross the sky.

LeAnna at Not Afraid of Color's new prompt has to do with our favourite spices. Recently I was here, a rare spot for me to be.

I ordered something completely new to me (well, everything in there is new to me really)...the Apple Crisp Oat Macchiato with cinnamon, a spice I like but just a little of. Anyway, it was delicious ...

Muffins, Slow Stitching, Goodbye Endeavour from Canadian Needle Nana

When a trio of turkey vultures were circling very low over our heads one afternoon last week, I had the thought that perhaps I'd brought too much of wild nature to this land (with all the feeding of the birds, squirrels, chipmunks, etc.). Turkey vultures are unnerving in size with amazing wing spans-up to 6 feet.  A walk through the back woods and we confirmed it wasn't us they were after...we found what was attracting them- a poor young raccoon had met its demise somehow.  We beat a hasty retreat and let nature take its course.

 Just ...

August OMG, Solidarity Blocks, My Selfie from Canadian Needle Nana

"And into the garden I shall go

To lose my mind and find my soul"

My garden is overblown these days...all the beds have so many interlopers I don't know where to start with the weeding. I actually enjoy a chaotic garden so this isn't bothering me that much. I did pull out the Wild Grape Vine that had wound its way through the daisies. But even that has pretty leaves to my eye.

Above is a Cedar Waxwing with its gorgeous lemon belly I captured down by the pond a few years back. The sun is ...

Rainbow House, Veranda Stitching, Garden Chat, Free Patterns from Canadian Needle Nana

My Raven portrait.  He was glowing in the early morning sun. They visit the feeders and front garden and actually let the little red squirrels boss them around. I 'm holding my breath for the day that will not be such wise behaviour on the part of the squirrels.
I've been in the garden a lot lately. It reminded me I need one of those fancy kneeling benches that flips to an actual seat like Karen at Quilts...Etc. showed in one of her spring garden posts. I was very busy with pulling out the surprising amount of weeds ...
